Wildlife Picnics: A Tale of Two Boys on an Adventure to Feed the Animals

A muddy trail in the woods.

"Ploup, ploup, ploup"

The sounds of our boots squishing through the thick mud made the boys giggle. Daddy led the way and we followed down the path carefully choosing our next squishy steps.

Kayven let out his call to the animals, "Deeh! Cawn!" Coltie followed with, "Cawn! Deeh!" I giggled and repeated the call, "Deer! Corn!" Daddy poured out the bag. Lately, it seemed we were feeding the deer alongside every raccoon, hog, squirrel, and possum within a mile radius. I suppose you could call it a Wildlife picnic. We checked the traps and took two of the biggest raccoons you'd ever see back to the base camp.

On our way back we stopped by another spot and a group of hogs was eating in the clearing. We startled them and they ran, I fumbled for my camera as fast as I could but holding two toddlers on a ranger it's hard to fumble anything quickly. I kicked myself for not being prepared knowing they're usually at that spot at that time of day.

We headed back to the base camp to drop off the raccoons, did you know people eat them? It's not for me, but I am curious. What does a raccoon even taste like?

Then the boys pointed back to the ranger. They were ready to go put out more wildlife picnics.

At my mom's we put out "wildlife picnics" in the back of the fields by the woods but these are a different type of wildlife picnics. We are feeding of course the deer and rabbits and whatever else comes to eat, but we are aiming for the crows. Yes, the crows.

There are a couple of things about crows that stick out to me.

  1. They can remember faces for up to SEVEN YEARS, I read about a woman who was mean to the crows in her yard and so they began following her and pooping on her car every time they saw her vehicle. So, yeah. Don't want them to be angry, right?

  2. I have heard many accounts of people feeding crows and the crows return with trinkets of sorts. Whether that be a coin, a soda tab, a dollar bill, a string, whatever it may be. If they feel it's gift-worthy, then I gladly accept! (Hoping for a $50-$100 gift though. Maybe some shint expensive jewelry or something. HA HA!)

So yeah, we enjoy doing the wildlife picnics thing. You never know what you may see in the woods! Until next time,
