The peach and plum orchard had such a dreamy feel to it with the breeze pushing its way through the leaves on the trees.
I walked with nanny's arm wrapped around mine holding her up while we shuffled through the grass. My family had never been to the orchard so the farmer walked ahead with my mom and stepdad pointing out the produce on the trees.
Nanny and I stood at the closest peach tree, I knew I couldn't walk all the way down the orchard and I knew she couldn't either so we looked over the peach tree on the end and she told me how I should pick up the peaches on the ground that still looked good. I explained to her that they were already rotted by now. But regardless, she wanted proof. When the rest got to the end of the orchard that we were at, I handed off nanny to mama and picked a couple of the last small peaches for them.
Then we walked back to the house and they headed home. After they had left, the farmer was telling me of plums that were getting ready so we jumped in the old farm truck and headed down the orchard lane to see them. We turned around at the end and the truck began to spit and sputter. I looked over at the farmer with wide eyes and he said, "Oops, we are out of gas. Let's try to get on down to the house." I shook my head thinking of how none of his trucks ever seem to have gas.
On the way back I pointed out the plums that are ready and we spoke of how we plan on making a fruit basket orchard soon. We talked about how we can't wait to have our future children and grandchildren running up and down this same orchard that we've all built up together. It's kind of crazy, the farmer and I were engaged when we planted the first row of plum trees.
Anyway, the plums will be at the produce stands very soon so be prepared!
