Little Farmer School: Garden

Writer's picture: Lady of the Farm Lady of the Farm

This past week's lesson was gardening, but we've been so busy ACTUALLY gardening that I forgot to post!

So feel free to do this with your tots this week!

If you're curious about our next week's lesson, we are following along with the Toddler Approved lesson plans. You can also follow along on Instagram for ideas. Some of the ideas here are from her suggestions and some are activities that I know my kids would be able to handle better.

Things to learn:

  • Names of tools like : shovel, rakes, bucket, wheelbarrow, watering can

  • What is a seed?

  • How to water the plants/garden/etc.

  • How to dig a hole for the seed.

Activities:

  • A Flower Garden Sensory Bin - Use some rocks or dirt, fake flowers, a small pot, watering tools.

  • Use chalk to draw flowers on the sidewalk, then using a watering can water them until they're all gone.

  • Plant a flower in a pot. Self explanatory lol! Get yourself a pot and plant a seed with them.

  • Place a seed inside a plastic bag with a damp paper towel. Change the paper towel out every few days and tape it in the window. Watch the roots form!

  • Plant some corn outside with the kids. Corn is a pretty tough plant and they will enjoy watching their corn grow until they're able to eat it!

Snacks:

  • Dirt Dessert in a cup! You can use pudding and Oreos, but I like to use the Oreo cheesecake box mixes from the dollar general. Mix the cheesecake mix and half the oreo mix together to look like dirt, add gummy worms, then put the remainder of oreos on top.

  • Make a fruit charcuterie board with fruits. Add in strawberries then buy some strawberry plants! Add watermelon, and plant some watermelon seeds.

  • Celery Caterpillars using peanut butter + grapes on top of celery, celery snails (add a orange slice or kiwi slice onto the celery with peanut butter) or keep it simple and just do ants on a log with peanut butter on top of celery with raisins.

  • Carrots with the greenery still attached! I don't know why, but carrots are so much more fun to eat when it looks like something Bugs Bunny would eat! LOL!

If you're following along also, let me know what you and your tots do!
