Little Farmer's Club: The Sprinklers.

Dust-covered feet tell a story of a land that's bone dry. The hum of the irrigation pump that once bugged me so much has now become just another entity of background sounds. We rode to the back of the fields, the pivot was already on. It slowly creaked along inch by inch.

I held Kayven, Colten's little legs shook in fear because he was so nervous at the sight of the pivot. I pulled Kayven's duck hat down and we ran under the cool water spraying out of the spray tips. The cold water felt so good in the sticky Summer air. I say Summer because this is Georgia and we have Summer & Winter, not Fall and Spring.

I looked down at Kayven who was surprised by the water. I put my face to his under the big-brimmed duck hat and I laughed which was contagious to him. He went from a look of shock to laughing and smiling.

The Farmer held Colten on the side out of the way of the water and when Colten saw us laughing and running through the water, then he was ready. I handed off Kayven and traded him for Colten. Again, we ran through the sprinklers. Coltie was not as enthused and let out a loud growl at me for running with him through the water. I dipped his feet through the air into the sprinklers. He seemed to enjoy that because he began to smirk a little more.

Around our usual bedtime, a storm began rolling back in, the same one that had missed us earlier. I told the farmer it was time for us to head back home. The lightning was getting closer and the last place I wanted the boys to be was in the fields by the pivot. So we turned everything off and headed home. I don't believe we ever got any rain from that storm because the ground is still so dry this morning, who knows it may be another night in the sprinklers again.

When we arrived home, we had lots of hands and feet to wash off. Somehow their little feet were so black and dirty and so were ours. I once said that if you ended the day with messy hair and dirty feet then it had been a good day and now, more than ever, I firmly agree with that.
