As the sun went down, I stood over the stove quickly throwing together a chicken and dumplings meal. We had company tonight visiting with us, so I doubled the recipe and added in extra dumplings. (Okay, okay, I usually do that anyway. We love dumplings!)
The children all ran through the house screaming and playing, Coltie Bug saw that the first little, tiny plate full of dumplings was placed on the table and he ran through the house yelling, "Hey y'all! Dinnertime!"
Sidenote: It makes a Southern mama's heart smile when she hears a toddler say "y'all" for the first time.
The children all gathered around our old worn-out dining table and soon their chitter chatter was replaced with the sounds of silence as they ate their chicken and dumplings. Then the oldest got up with his plate in hand and walked over to where I stood eating my own bowl, "Could I have some more please? That stuff was really good." I excitedly grabbed his plate and slapped another big spoonful on there. When a child tells you that your food is good it releases serotonin, you can't convince me otherwise.
