It was 11:30 p.m. on July 3rd and we knew it was time. We had kept Abbie's pregnancy on the down-low since the beginning because it was her first pregnancy and we wanted to make sure we had healthy pups before people started wanting them.
We prepared her whelping bed and closer to 12:00 a.m. on the Fourth of July, she let out an unearthly screech and we jumped and ran to her. My sister-in-law was at our house patiently waiting for our babies to arrive with me while the farmer irrigated corn and then when they began coming, they began coming fast.
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, we were excitedly chattering about how many more could there be?! Six, Seven!
After about the sixth or seventh baby, Abbie's belly had gone down considerably so my sister in law went home and I stayed on the couch listening to the sweet little whimpers of the puppies while the farmer finished up irrigating. I was almost asleep whenI heard one last puppy so I got up and checked on the pup and smiled knowing (hoping) that puppy number eight was our last one for the night.
So, it's been a year. A full year with these little guys. Everyone went to a great home and I couldn't have possibly hand-picked better parents for them all.
Our two are Teddy & Clementine.
Teddy is so sweet, a little on the shy side, and very gentle with the others. He likes to play with his toys to himself, he loves one on one attention, loves tractor rides, and likes to sneak up on chickens and then stare at them. He's a little weirdo.
Clementine is a wild one, always finding trouble, very mischievous, and very rough. She will grab Teddy or Baxter by the ear and take them all around the yard before they finally get enough of it. She loves food of all kinds & she has so much energy. She is our little wildcard.
Today I woke up and decided I was in a good mood, I chose happiness today.
So I got up after sleeping in and looked up recipes for dog cupcakes. I found one that I had most of the ingredients for, blueberry muffins. But I had no muffin pan. So I put it in a cake pan and then used a mason jar lid to cut out small circles. Then for the frosting, I made it with cream cheese and blueberries and mixed them.
I finally finished them and let the dogs out to potty, then it was time to eat. No one was here except me and the dogs, so I had no help to get them to be still. I tried my best to get them to sit in the dining room chairs for photos, but that was a fail.
I finally got one photo of Teddy and one photo of Clementine sitting still and then placed all their plates on the floor and within seconds everyone was happily chomping away at their little cakes. Then, just as quickly as I had placed them on the floor, everything was gone.
It was such a cute little birthday party even if it was just our little crew and some last-minute cakes.
Yes, I know they're dogs, but their entire lives revolve around this house and us making their lives happy. We are their entire lives. So, I will continue doing something special for my babies' birthdays even if it's something simple. Anything to make their days happy.
