The Farmer & I have begun to talk about the search for a temporary home more lately, & marriage seems to be coming faster and faster. Lately I have been reflecting alot. I don't feel like I should be this old. It's almost like I was 16 one day and I woke up the next day almost 20. How is it possible that you can be so wrapped up in life that it flashes before you? It kind of scares me. Well, that's another story for another day. Another thing I have been reflecting on is how much I changed after The Farmer & I began dating. I've learned so much and have a new respect for farmer's and all that they do. Here's a few things that you'll learn by dating a farmer.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T. How many of us can honestly say that we have never once even thought about going around a tractor speeding and flipping him the bird? If you say you haven't then you must've been raised on a farm. Anyway, before The Farmer came into my life I would get stuck behind a tractor and I would get too close, speed around them, rev my car up. I had no respect at all. Now, every man on that tractor, I treat it as if that is my man up there. I wouldn't want some crazed driver speeding around my man so I don't do it to the other farmers. I've been in the buddy seat when someone would fly by and it does make you a little nervous. It makes me nervous and makes The Farmer mumble under his breath.
Empathy. If something happens with the crops, he doesn't suffer alone. Everyone in the family suffers. Even if you're not married yet, you will still suffer. Date nights get turned into fast food and Netflix nights instead of nice restaurant and bowling dates.
Time is Precious. Sometimes he's busy. He can't always help it. You will learn that every moment is precious and should be spent side by side. You'll learn that when he comes through the door and is sitting for only a few minutes beside you, that is a precious moment that you should make note of and cherish with everything.
The house may not look like a magazine 24/7. Muddy boots, animals, bugs, and produce may litter the house. For example, yesterday The Farmer had a box of the last bit of corn. It had ants crawling all over the box since some of the kernels had busted open. It was extremely sweet! I told The Farmer that he would NOT be bringing ants into our home when we got one and I laughed to myself thinking, "This is probably one of the things I least have to worry about."
You'll have to be strong for both of you. Sometimes he will get stressed but your job is not to make it worse but to try to help him. Crops won't always be perfect and money won't always be flowing in. He will get stressed once in awhile and on those nights you should do something special to make him feel better. Cook him a nice meal, give him a warm towel when he starts to get out of the shower, and you can even just sit there hugging him for a few minutes.
It won't always be easy, no one ever said it would be, in fact, I've actually been told constantly that it would be ridiculously hard and that I wouldn't be able to handle it but so far, it's nice. I have always worked and went to school in the city and honestly, I'd rather be in the country than the city any day.
